Twenty years of self portraits. The mes don’t look happy! In 2022 I will make one that shows I’m having fun.

Ritual 10: Square comps
I’ve been working on the 1:1 format in preparation for The Actual Banner. Here are some full composition squares…and then just one new detail from Paul Klee because I think that one might not be done yet! Might be adding a layer or two tomorrow.
Ritual 9: Ani DiFranco
Ani DiFranco was in one of the early compositions but she needed her own ritual. What an immense influence she has had on me, through lyrics, actions, activism, guitar. Thank you, Ani DiFranco!
An exuberant return to ritual! Beautiful flows emerge but then disappear in seconds as the paint dries. Only I get to see them, so I’m trying to capture some of the moments on camera. Rushing swirling roaring rivers can be underwhelming when they run dry. Working on a paintbrush-camera shuttling maneuver that I hope to perfect or port to video. […]
Chavanod in May
Gorgeous arrival and direct to the forest! Sari wants ramps and wild asparagus for tonight’s dinner. Video description: Loud rushing bright water sparkles in the sun with Alpine rock formations and giant boulders in the creek and a wall of green behind.
Ritual 7: Howard Hodgkin
My Ritual Artist Open Call project is an opportunity to express gratitude to the artists and women who inspire me. So far it exists as a bunch of multilayered calligraphy compositions, and eventually it will materialize as a square banner for my collaboration with @ritual_open. The idea was not to involve anyone I know personally and […]
Ritual 6: Wangechi Mutu
It was so clear in my mind that I first encountered Mutu in 2005 at the Tate Modern, but I can’t find anything online about any such show. They were giving out prints of her beautiful, unforgettable collages, and I can’t find the one I grabbed. Unforgettable and yet memory tricks me. Times and places […]
Ritual 5: Kathleen Hanna
I’m trying to work these calligraphies into a square format for the square banner. Maybe not quite there yet but I do get to send gratitude to Kathleen Hanna, who is literally a rock star—and the best kind of artist: one who brings other women along with her, directs people to resources, tells the truth […]
Ritual 4: Maintenance Phase
Over the last few years, between You’re Wrong About, Maintenance Phase, and You Are Good, I have learned that podcasting is a new art form—insofar as art is a crafted sensory experience that shows me my world in a new way and thereby fundamentally changes that world. Thank you Maintenance Phase, thank you Aubrey Gordon, […]
First layer thanks Sia, Ani DiFranco, Fever Ray, and Gnucci; second layer Jia Tollentino; and final layer Aaron Swartz. In the midst of my new gratitude practice, giant thanks to the spectacular women of @ritual_open. I am immensely honored to work with every one of them.
